Kozhikode, Oct 19: On November 14, when India celebrates children’s day, a new mahila mall (women’s mall) will be launched in Kerala’s Kozhikode. Considered to be the first-of-its-kind in south India, the mall is located in front of Fathima hospital.

Entirely and exclusively for women, the project was started by Kozhikode Corporation’s Kudumbashree unit with the support of state and district Kudumbashree missions and Unity group. Kudumbashree Mission, National Urban Livelihood Mission and the corporation's unit together pooled in over Rs 3 crore for the project.

A 10-member women committee, formed under the community development societies of corporation's Kudumbashree, will manage the mall. Arrangements to put up stalls inside the five-story building is currently underway.

The mall with an area of 36,000 sq ft will come up on 54 cents of private land that has been leased for a period of five years. The mall will have a spacious parking lot and women taxi services. Four She Cabs will be available for women during working hours.

Around 79 stalls, set up by women entrepreneurs, will occupy the first three floors. A micro bazar will be set up in the basement with 24 Kudumbashree units putting up their stalls for sale.

"The mall will provide a different shopping experiences to people as it will cater to the needs of all types of consumers. The mall will provide 250 direct and 500 indirect employment opportunities to women," said M V RamsiIsmail, project officer of corporation's Kudumbashree.

The mall will house all kinds of enterprises such as supermarket, food court, kids park, spa, beauty parlour, women’s bank, fancy stores, textiles and ready-mades, boutiques, footwear, dry cleaning, car washing, opticals, handicrafts, baby care, home appliances and book stall. Besides, there will be conference rooms, training centres and underground car parking facility.

The Kudumbasree Bazaar, which will be a permanent outlet for Kudumbasree products, will be set up on the premises of the mall in the second phase. At present, the Kudumbasree members get to sell their products only at the fairs organised during festival seasons. Once the season is over, these products are not available anywhere. The Kudumbasree Bazaar will ensure that these products are available for the needy round the year. The mission plans to set up bazaars in all districts.

The booking for the shops in the mall, which is under construction, has already started. Kudumbasree members will be offered a 10% discount in rent and need to pay only six months’ rent in advance while others need to pay 10 months’ rent.

Puttur: The long-cherished dream of a government medical college in Puttur has moved a decisive step closer to reality, with the Karnataka State Finance Department granting its official approval for the construction of a new 300-bed hospital.

Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai announced the crucial development to reporters on Monday, confirming that the official communication from the finance department was issued on November 27. This 300-bed facility is intended to be the cornerstone for the establishment of the government medical college, a project announced in the state budget.

Fast-Track Implementation

The MLA outlined an aggressive timeline for the project:

•    A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the hospital is expected to be ready within 45 days.

•    The tender process for the construction will be completed within two months.

Following the completion of the tender process, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the project.

"Setting up a medical college in Puttur is a historical decision by the Congress government in Karnataka," Rai stated. The project has an estimated budget allocation of Rs 1,000 crore for the medical college.

Focus on Medical Education Department

The MLA highlighted a key strategic move: requesting the government to implement the hospital construction through the Medical Education Department instead of the Health and Family Welfare Department. This is intended to streamline the entire process of establishing the full medical college, ensuring the facilities—including labs, operation theatres, and other necessary infrastructure—adhere to the strict guidelines set by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The proposed site for the project is in Bannur.

Rai also took the opportunity to address political criticism, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise despite "apprehensions" and "mocking and criticising" from opposition parties who had failed to take similar initiatives when they were in power. "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has kept his word," he added.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
