Mangaluru, Sep 23: Sleuths from Sullia police have arrested a youth for allegedly raping a 16-year-old Dalit girl after luring her from a hospital at Sullia taluk in Dakshina Kannanda district few days ago.

On September 7, a woman hailing from Somwarpete in Kodagu district was admitted at a private hospital in Sullia due to pain in her lower back. She had brought along her 16-year-old niece to tend to her needs in the hospital.
Three days later, an accident victim Tyagaraj from Bandyadka in Kerala was admitted in the same hospital. His relative Ramesh used to visit him each day along with his friend’s son Naveen. It is learnt that Naveen got acquainted with the minor girl and also gave her his mobile number. They had reportedly conversed over the phone a few times, with the girl using the mobile phone of another patient in the hospital.
When the girl unexpectedly disappeared from the hospital on September 17, her aunt raised an alarm and began conducting a search for the girl. It was eventually discovered that the girl had left from the hospital along with Naveen on his motorbike.
The girl reportedly came back to the hospital alone at 4 p.m. on the same day, and revealed that Naveen had taken her to a secluded place near Chennakeshava temple in Sullia and sexually assaulted her.
The girl alleged in her complaint that Naveen had raped her thrice after taking her to a secluded spot, and sent her back to the hospital in the auto-rickshaw.
The accused Naveen was arrested on Friday and produced him before court on Sunday after interrogating him. Naveen has been remanded to judicial custody.
The investigation is being conducted by a police team led by Dakshina Kannada Additional SP Vincent Shanthakumar.
