1 dies, 3 missing, 200 rescued after landslides in DK-Kodagu border village

Sullia, Aug 18: At least one person lost his life while three others were feared missing after massive landslides and flash floods in Jodupala village in Kodagu district bordering Dakshina Kannada yesterday.

A team of National Disaster Response Force along with the Dakshina Kannada district police rescued over 200 people from the affected area soon after the incident.

Sullia Circle Inspector of Police R. Satish Kumar, who visited the spot said that the police found one body after the landslips. The body was shifted to Sullia Hospital.

As the floods ravaged the coffee estate and other inhabited areas, residents of Jodupala were caught by surprise. Soon, the police and NDRF team reached the spot and evacuated those stranded.

“Jodupala village had lost connectivity as the landslide had caused a bridge connecting to Sampaje to collapse on Friday evening. NDRF personnel ferried locals on 10 boats within a record time of one hour, between 4 pm and 5 pm,” informed Additional Commissioner Kumara.

Volunteers too joined the operations, said B R Ravikanthe Gowda, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada. Evacuated people were being housed in food shelters opened at two schools near Sullia as well as in Jodupala.

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister U T Khader and Deputy Commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil who were on their way back from Kukke Subrahmanya after visiting rain-hit areas, rushed to Jodupala to oversee rescue operations.

Meanwhile, district disaster management bulletin has warned of heavy rains in part of Dakshina Kannada amounting to 115 to 160mm. Fisherfolk are warned against venturing into the sea. While Shiradi and Sampaje are shut, Charmadi ghat is open for vehicles. Schools and Colleges are functioning as usual.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
