100 booked, six arrested for Mudipu violence; top cop blames Bajrang Dal

Mangaluru, Mar 17: The Mangaluru Police have arrested six persons in connection with Mudipu violence wherein Hindu fringe groups prevented students and staff of a degree college from undertaking a study tour and attacked a place of worship belonging to Muslims.

Four Bajrang Dal activists have been arrested for creating ruckus on the campus of Government First Grade College, Mudipu, on Saturday night.

They are Dinesh, 29, Vivekananda, 29, both from Manjeshwar, Praveen Kumar, Kurnadu Village and Hariprasad alias Harish, 28 from Balepuni Village, both in Bantwal taluk.

They have been arrested under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 144 (unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon), 147, 148, 341, 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 427, 307 along with 149.

Two more alleged Bajrang Dal activists have been arrested under IPC sections 295 (Injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 427 along with 34 of IPC. They have been identified as Ramesh, 22 and Thilak, 25 both from Konaje.

The arrested were produced before a local court which remanded them to judicial custody till March 26.

Sources said that a car used by Bajrang Dal activists to pelt stones at Noorania Juma Masjid and Swalahuddin Madrasa at Mudipu, has been seized by Konaje police. A few motorbikes also have been seized.

DCP Law and Order Santosh Babu said that cases have been booked against 100 persons mainly under Section 307 (attempt to murder). He said police have launched a manhunt to arrest few more miscreants identified as Arun, Tulsi, Ravi Gatti, Shivaprasad Mudungarukatte, Vinod, Ravi Daigoli Varkady, Arun Conductor and Yashwant.

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan said that he had visited the spot, spoken to the victims and villagers and assured them all of action against the miscreants. He said that Bajrang Dal was one of the groups responsible for Saturday’s violence.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
