Kasaragod, Mar 23: A 14-year-old girl was killed and six others were injured when the car they were travelling fell into the Karyankod river, near Neeleshwaram, here in the early hours of Sunday.

The occupants of the car were returning to Ezhilode after taking part in the Bharani Maholsavam at the Palakkunnu Bhagavathi temple near Uduma.
A few persons fishing in the river came to the rescue of the victims. Some of the victims managed to get out of the vehicle before it slipped into the flooded river.
The police assisted by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel, who reached the spot around 5.30 am, took the injured to nearby hospital while two of the critically injured persons were rushed to the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital.
The injured were identified as Padmini, Narayanan, Sharada, Shiju, Vishnu (17) and Vijina (14).
Vehicular traffic on the National Highway was disrupted for some time as it took nearly 90 minutes to lift the car to the river bank, the police said
