Mangaluru, Feb 18: In a gut wrenching incident, an 18-year-old was charred to death when her house was gutted in fire on Tuesday at Uttambe in Guttigar under the limits of Subramanya police station near Sullia on the outskirts of the city.
The deceased has been identified as Akshita, daughter of Narayana Gowda and Saroja couple. The girl was alone inside the house when the fire erupted.
At the time of the tragedy, girl's father, a carpenter by profession, was working at Subrahmanya temple while the mother had visited a relative’s house. Her brother had also gone outside.
Even though the exact reason for the fire mishap is yet to be ascertained, electrical short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire and Akshita was trapped inside.
This house is located in a remote area and there are no houses in the immediate neighbourhood. As a result the residents of the village could not see the fire immediately.
When residents saw thick smoke emanate from on Narayana's house, they rushed to the spot and tried to douse the fire. However the house was almost gutted.
The Fire and Emergency Services personnel were called an hour after the incident. When they entered the house a dead body of the girl was lying amidst the rubles.
The fire also destroyed valuables inside the house. Gold ornaments worth Rs 1 lakh and a cash amount of Rs 25,000 were burnt down.
Subramanya Police are investigating the matter. The samples of burnt materials are expected to be sent to forensic laboratory for assessment.
