Bengaluru, Jan 15: Two Karnataka legislators announced withdrawal of their support to the Congress-JD(S) coalition on Tuesday .

Independent H Nagesh, who represents the Mulbagal constituency and Karnataka Prajnavantha Janata Paksha’s (KPJP) Ranebennur legislator R Shankar, a former minister in the HD Kumaraswamy cabinet, have written to Governor Vajubhai R Vala about their decision to withdraw support to the Congress-JD(S) coalition.

Nagesh has announced that he will support the BJP, whereas Shankar has merely stated that he had withdrawn his support to the ruling alliance.

Reacting to this development, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said that he is “totally relaxed.” He told reporters: “If two independent MLAs withdraw their support, what will be the numbers? I know what my strength is.”

“The atmosphere is suffocating. I’ve decided to support the BJP to install a stable government and to see that they perform better than this (coalition) government. In the past seven months, this government hasn’t performed as per expectations. I’ve taken the decision to support the BJP without any compulsion,” Nagesh told news agency.

Shankar, who was inducted into the Cabinet when the Congress-JD(S) government was formed in June this year and dropped in December, said he did not get the necessary support to carry out work. “I was a minister and thanks to the blessings of my constituents, I worked satisfactorily. But I didn’t get the support required to do more work. I’m withdrawing my support with a lot of pain,” Shankar told ANI. He also hit out at the ruling alliance. “The government has failed to deliver. They’re not able to bring the state out of drought toward development.”

The strength of the ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition was 120 - 80 of the Congress, 37 of the JD(S), one BSP, one independent and one KPJP. With Nagesh and Shankar out, the alliance is down to 118.

“I don’t know why they’ve taken this decision,” Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara told reporters. “The two supported us at the time of forming the government and one of them was made a minister. Shankar was a minister and nobody came his way. Now they’ve decided to support the BJP and it’s their wish,” he said.

This development comes amid speculation, and fear, that the BJP was trying to lure legislators of the ruling alliance. “The BJP is hellbent on dislodging our government. They’re offering money and power lure. We don’t know how many of our MLAs are in touch with the BJP. The entire country is watching what the BJP is doing. We will contact our MLAs and convince them,” Parameshwara said.

AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka KC Venugopal, who held a series of meetings with Congress leaders in Bengaluru, ruled out any threat to the government. “These are things created by a desperate BJP. The government is very much stable,” he said.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
