The victim, identified as Ranya P Rajan, was a two months pregnant and a mother of a one-and-a-half year old son. After conducting post-mortem, her body was handed over to her parents by the police on Sunday.

Sources of Manjeshwaram police station, under whose limits the attack took place on May 1, said that a team was dispatched to nab 37-year-old Manoj, the murder-accused husband, who is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kollam.

Ranya, a scheduled caste woman and Manoj, who belongs to Nair community, entered into wedlock towards the end of 2013 after a few years of love affair. It was only after their marriage, Ranya saw the true colour of her lover, who was an alcoholic and also had concealed the fact of his first marriage with another woman.

According to her parents and neighbours, Manoj and his mother often used to torture Ranya for no reason. The torture exacerbated after she gave birth to a child one-and-a-half years ago. Every month jobless Manoj used to snatch complete salary of Ranya, who was a staff nurse at Community Health Centre in Manjeshwaram.

After repeated requests from her parents and neighbours she had lodged a complaint against her husband and in-laws with jurisdictional Manjdeshwaram police a few months ago. The police had reportedly given Manoj time to come to a compromise with his wife or face arrest.

On the fateful night of May 1, Ranya was beaten black and blue by her mother-in-law and the former fell unconscious. Manoj, who joined his mother, poured alcohol on Ranya and set her on fire. In the melee, he also suffered burns on his hand.

While Ranya was rushed to Fr Muller Hospital in Mangaluru by her neighbours and parents, Manoj himself got admitted to the same hospital to keep her threatening against revealing truth to the police. It is learnt that he had threatened to kill their son if he brought the fact to the light.

After a week, Manoj got discharged and got admitted again in another hospital in Kerala's Kollam, while Ranya continued to battle for life in Mangaluru. However, on May 14, she breathed her last. A team of police from Manjeshwaram, who are conducting probe into this murder case, visited Mangaluru on Sunday as part of investigation.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
