22nd Alva’s Virasat Award conferred on SPB

Moodbidri, Dec 24: As many as 30,000 people witnessed the grand opening ceremony of the 22nd Alva’s Virasat at Smt Vanajakshi K Sripathi Bhat Vedike in Puthige, here on Thursday.

The 22nd Alva’s Virasat Award-2015 was conferred on renowned veteran singer S P Balasubrahmanyam.

The entire venue was lit up with a special decoration of lights. Prior to the stage function, the guests and dignitaries were welcomed with a cultural procession.

Addressing a huge gathering after receiving the award Balasubrahmanyam said that the award is held in a great awe and respect by him.

He dedicated the award to his mother and all the elders who have nurtured him. He added that if he has a next birth, he would like to be born in Karnataka.The award carries a citation, a memento and Rs 1 lakh.

Inaugurating Alva’s Virasat – 2015, Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade called upon youth to cultivate the habit of enjoying art and cultural events, along with their studies. The holidays can be utilised for cultural activities instead of merry making, he said.

Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva delivered the keynote address. Minister for Youth Affairs, Sports and Fisheries K Abhayachandra Jain presided over the programme.

Hemavathi V Heggade, former Minister K Amarnath Shetty, SCDCC Bank Chairman Dr M N Rajendra Kumar, Kannada and Culture Department Director K A Dayananda and others were present.

R K Padmanabha presented a Carnatic classical recital on the occasion. Yaksha Sangeetha was performed by Sathyanarayana Puninchittaya and party, while Yaksha Namana by Alva’s College students, dance and music by Manipuri and Sri Lankan artistes.

A fusion of four violins ‘Nada Surabhi’by Mysuru Nagara, Mysuru Manjunath, Ganesh and Kumaresh, was the highlight of the evening. Balasubrahmanyam and his troupe mesmerised the audience with their performance.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B. Ahmed Mudassir and Mr. Nissar Fakeer Mohammed, along with the distinguished guests of honour Mr. B. A. Nazeer and Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar. In their inspiring addresses, the guests encouraged the graduating students and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the management, faculty, and students.

Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The Mangaluru City Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the inaugural ceremony of Karavali Utsava, which will be held at the Karavali Utsava Ground on Saturday.

The festival will be inaugurated at 6:00 pm by Dakshina Kannada District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cultural and public programmes will be held at the venue every evening and will continue until January 2.

According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, parking of vehicles is strictly prohibited on both sides of the road from Lalbagh to Karavali Utsava Ground. Visitors are requested to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas.

To help the public, traffic signboards and parking guidance flex boards have been installed along the routes leading to the venue. The police have urged commuters and visitors to follow these instructions to ensure smooth traffic movement.
