Bangalore, Sep 3: Twenty-four students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been given government scholarship to study abroad.
Minister for Social Welfare H Anjaneya on Tuesday said the parents of most of the students were daily wage earners, drivers, retired government employees or vegetable sellers.
He handed over sanction letters of scholarship to the 24 students who have received admission in foreign universities, including those in Germany, France, the U.K., Sweden and Australia. Of the 24 students, 18 have opted for higher studies in engineering, one in LLM, three in MBA, and two in medicine. Eight students received scholarship of over Rs. 30 lakh.
Among them were Gargi Suresh Bhan of Bangalore received Rs. 43.43 lakh for studying M.Com. in the University of Wollongong NSW, Australia, while Chinmaswamaiah of Mysore got Rs. 41.97 lakh for studying M.S. in Business Analytic and Project Management in the University of Connecticut, U.S.
The scholarship includes tuition fee and travel expenses.
As many as 38 students had applied for the scholarship. The government granted the scholarship under the Karnataka Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan and Tribal Sub-Plan (Planning, Allocation and Utilisation of Financial Resources) Act, 2013.
Only students who have received admission in foreign universities are eligible to get the scholarship. Such students should have secured more than 60 per cent in degree and should be less than 35 years of age. Moreover, annual income of their parents should not be more than Rs. 3 lakh.
