Mysuru, Sept 6: In a gruesome incident, a 3-year-old boy was ruthlessly branded with red-hot knife after he relieved himself in the day-care centre on Tuesday in an Anganwadi Centre in Mysuru.

Based on a complaint lodged by the child’s parents, the police have booked a case against an anganwadi worker for the crime. The worker has been suspended pending inquiry.

Police said Neelamma, who works with Devayyanahundi Anganwadi Centre in Srirampura II Stage, allegedly branded the boy with a red-hot knife in a fit of rage after she saw him relieving himself at the daycare centre on Tuesday.

On reaching home, the boy informed his parents about the incident who then noticed the injury mark on his lower limbs. They along with other villagers reached the centre and staged a protest, demanding action against the accused. They were pacified by the deputy director of the child welfare department Mysuru, K Radha and chairman of the Zilla panchayat standing committee on social justice.

K Radha said that the accused staffer initially denied the allegations. However, her stance changed when she was confronted along with the boy and his kin. The accused staffer has been placed under suspension after a probe was ordered into the allegations. Surprisingly, it was the boy’s parents who urged concerned authorities to not press charges against the staffer following which a complaint was registered at the Kevumpu police station.

Chairman of the Zilla panchayat, SR Nandish while handing over an immediate compensation of Rs 5,000 to the boy’s family said that more compensation will be given to them.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
