Hassan, Nov 13: Five workers attached to a borewell drilling company were killed and two others were injured when the truck in which they were travelling toppled in Muththige village in Arkalgud, Hassan, on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Anuth, 21, Muchiram, 60, Anil Maath, 60, Bheem Singh, 25, and Puduram, 55. The injured are being treated at a hospital in Hassan.
It happened at 4.30am when they were returning to Bengaluru after drilling a borewell in Muththige village. They were lying on top of the pipes loaded on the truck. When the truck toppled while negotiating a curve, the pipes fell on them.
A?man named Vikram had sunk a borewell on government land near his farm in the village. But the borewell didn't yield water. According to officials, he didn't have permission to sink the borewell.
Hassan district in-charge minister A?Manju, who visited the hospital, said that he had directed the officials concerned to take action against those involved in sinking the borewell.
Sinking of borewells by individuals is banned. Borewells can be sunk during an emergency only and that too by obtaining prior permission from the taluk administration, he added.
Additional Superintendent of Police Shobha Rani, Holenarasipur DySP Kishor Babu and Police Inspector R?Suresh visited the spot.
