Puttur, Nov 15: The Dakshina Kannada district police have arrested five persons in two different cases pertaining to illegal transportation of cattle.
Three persons were arrested Perne near Uppinangady by the sleuths of Uppinangady police station on Wednesday on charge of illegally transporting 15 cows and one calf. The police seized animals, a mini goods van and a motorbike from the accused.
The accused as Vinay Kumar, 38, of Kasaragod, Sunil Kumar, 45, of Kannur, and C.H. Suresh, 38, of Kasaragod.
Acting on information about illegal cattle transportation, Uppinangady PSI Nanda Kumar and his team stopped the Kerala-registered vehicle at Perne on NH 75 and found the cattle without any documents. They were allegedly meant for slaughtering in Kerala, the police learnt.
They also seized a motorbike, whose rider was escorting the van, Superintendent of Police B.R. Ravikanthe Gowda in a communique here said.
Meanwhile, Vitla police on Wednesday arrested two persons on the charge of illega cattle transportation and seized one cow and a vehicle at Salettur village.
The arrested have been identified as Praveen Nayak, 29, resident of Kodimbadi, Puttur, and Jagadish Hegde, 32, Padnur, Puttur.
Acting on a specific information, Vitla PSI S. Yellappa and his team intercepted the vehicle near Kattatila bridge and found a well-built cow being transported in a precarious condition. The accused did not have any documents for cattle transportation, the SP said in a communique.
In both the cases, police have registered cases under Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act 1964 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Sources said that all the five arrested have links with Hindutva outfits. However, the police have not confirmed whether the arrested are members of any organisation.
