70% job quota for Kannadigas:?draft to be placed before Cabinet

Bengaluru, Dec 27: The government has effected amendments to the Karnataka Industrial Employment rules to ensure 70% reservation for Kannadigas in the private sector, said Labour Minister Santhosh Lad.

The minister, however, said the rules will not apply to the IT-BT sector. Lad told reporters in Bengaluru on Monday that the draft rules would be placed before the Cabinet in a couple of months for approval.

He said industrial establishments are provided land, water, electricity at concessional rates apart from tax rebates or deferment. “Since these concessions are given, private employers will be required to provide at least 50% reservation to locals/Kannadigas in GroupC' and GroupDcategories and at least 20% reservation in GroupA' andB' categories. In all, 70% of jobs should be reserved for Kannadigas,” he said. If industries fail to fall in line, the government would withdraw concessions granted to them. Lad, however, added that the IT-BT vertical too might be brought under these proposed rules eventually.

He said that there are around 16,000 types of industries in the state, and the aim was to ensure that Kannadigas are employed in all these industries. As there are no statistics available on the number of locals employed in private establishments, the department would soon carry out the exercise, he added.

The department has amended the Karnataka Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Rules, 1961 and has proposed the The Karnataka Industrial Employment (Amendment) Rules, 2016.

Mangaluru NRI returning from Saudi Arabia arrested over Instagram post

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The programme reflected the college’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, character building, and the holistic development of students.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Asif Mohammed, whose presence greatly enriched the occasion. The celebration was further graced by the chief guests Mr. P. B.
