Kasaragod, Apr 24: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a charge sheet in the Karipur gold smuggling case, arraigning five persons, including a senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) official, as accused.

According to the charge sheet, which was filed before the CBI court in Kochi, the accused smuggled 22 kg of gold, worth around Rs.5.52 crore, on three occasions between November and December 2014 through the Karipur airport. They were booked under provisions 2, 12, 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 120(B) and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.
The charge sheet said that Noushad had bribed Prakashan and Manoj. The carrier women, who had come from Dubai, had kept the gold in the drainage hole of a toilet at the airport. Prakashan and Manoj, who had easy access to the airport, took the gold bars outside evading customs sleuths.
The racket, using the same modus operandi, smuggled in 4 kg of gold, worth Rs.97 lakh, with the help of Susha on November 2 and another 8 kg, worth Rs.1.87 crore, on November 15 using Musriya Muneer. The activity came to light when Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths on December 7, 2014 caught Susha while she was attempting to smuggle in 10 kg of gold, worth Rs.2.68 crore.
Probe revealed that Prakashan had received a bribe of Rs.7.5 lakh. Considering the involvement of a government employee, the CBI registered a separate case later.
