Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 3: Hundreds of activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarti Parishad, the students' wing of Bharatiya Janata Party staged protests in twin districts of coastal Karnataka on Monday to exert pressure on state government to take stringent action against accused involved in sexual harassment on minor girls.

Chaitra, an ABPV activist from University College, Mangaluru, addressing the group of protesters at Ambedkar circle in Mangaluru accused the Congress led state government and police department of failing to take action against rapists.

Stating that the number of sexual assault cases against women and children has been constantly increasing in Karnataka, she said that lack of safety measures in educational institutions for girls has helped the offenders to commit crimes.

She urged the government to ensure that women safety cell be formed in all educational institutions.

Lavin Kotian, another ABVP activist said that police in Shivamogga are deliberately trying to protect those responsible for the death of a Class 8 girl in Thirthahalli last week.

Jayesh PK, another ABVP activist, speaking on the occasion warned the state government that if the latter failed to take action against rapists, people of the state would take law into their hands.

A similar protest was held at Udupi city. Large number of students from various schools and colleges took part in the protest held near Clock Tower under the aegis of ABVP.

Addressing the protest Sahana, a law student said that an atmosphere of anarchy and lawlessness prevailed across Karnataka thanks to inefficiency of the incumbent government. “Parents are feeling insecure about their daughters. There is no safety for women in this state,” she said.

She also said that in many cases police and politicians are trying to cover up the rape cases and protect the offenders.
