Chairing a meeting of the District Tourism Development Committee and the Malpe Beach Development Committee, R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, took exception to the tardy pace of development of the Malpe beach link road by the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL). If the work was not expedited, stern action would be taken, he said.

Dr. Vishal said that priority should be given to the maintenance of cleanliness of beaches in the district. Representatives of private agencies overseeing the development of beaches said that they had decided to take the help of police, Coastal Security Police for maintaining cleanliness and security in the beaches.

Dr. Vishal said that funds would be provided to install CCTV cameras and walkie-talkies to security personnel at Malpe beach. Private agencies should take the permission of the District Administration before organising any festivals on the beach, he said.

D. Manjunathayya, Commissioner of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC), said that a separate drinking water line would be provided for Malpe beach along with a separate power transformer.

Dr. Vishal issued directions for the formation of a separate committee to study the proposal for developing hotels as per the State Tourism Policy 2015-2020.

He also directed the Assistant Director of Tourism Nagaraj to select beneficiaries for tourist taxis as per government guidelines. It was decided to hand over the work of constructing a musical fountain at Kota Shivaram Karanth Theme Park to the Nirmiti Kendra.

Arun Kumar, project director of Nirmiti Kendra, said that the construction of toilets, for people arriving to participate in the biennial Paryaya festival on January 18, near Sri Krishna Mutt here, had been started.

Dr. Vishal directed the Tourism Development Committee to submit an action plan to organise a programme for children, who would be participating in the Children’s Film Festival in the district from November 22 to 26.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
