Mangaluru, Nov 11: Backed by various organisations, the Mangalore Bar Association on Friday staged a jatha here demanding for the setting up of a circuit bench of high court in the city.
Members of the bar and students of city's law college took part in the march that commenced from the district and sessions' court premises and culminated in front of the office of deputy commissioner.
Speaking on the occasion, S P Chengappa, president of the Association said that they have been demanding for a HC circuit bench of in Mangaluru for several years.
“Though circuit benches of the High Court are functioning in Dharwad and Kalaburagi, people of this region are deprived of the facility. People of the region, especially poor, find it difficult to approach the High Court for their legal issues," Chengappa said.
"It is enshrined in article 39(A) of the Indian Constitution that deals with equal justice and free legal aid to provide access to judicial systems to all," he said, adding that even today around 60-70% of India's population still have little or no access to judicial recourse at any point in time.
The 5,000 odd lawyers in Dakshina Kannada and 15,000-20,000 odd lawyers in the catchment area of the proposed circuit bench namely DK, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu will get the opportunity to exhibit their legal acumen by practicing in the high court.
This will also offer an opportunity for the best legal minds to get elevated as judges of high court and thereby, give a big boost to legal profession which he pointed is floundering for want of talent.
