Bengaluru, Jul 4: Even though several leaders from Lingayat, Vokkaliga and Dalit communities were in the race for the post of president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), former minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who belongs to Brahmin community was on Wednesday elevated to the coveted post.
As per the appointment announced by the Congress, Gundu Rao will take the charge from incumbent president and also Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, a Dalit, who had held the post for record eight years. Former Minister Eswar Khandre has been appointed as Working President of the KPCC.
Rao, who is currently serving as Working President of the KPCC will take over as the party chief from Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara.
Since Rahul Gandhi is keen on having young faces, he has appointed Rao and Khandre for the top posts of the KPCC.
Though former Union Minister K H Muniyappa, Rajya Sabha member B K Hariprasad and Irrigation Minister D K Shivakumar, senior leader H K Patil are lobbying for the post, Rahul selected Rao for the post, as he is acceptable to all sections within the party, said sources.
Though Shivakumar is trying hard for the post, several Vokkaliga leaders are opposed to him.
According to sources, Rahul offered the post to former irrigation minister and Lingayat leader M B Patil, but he was keen on becoming a minister in the Kumaraswamy cabinet.
