Bengaluru, Apr 3: An elderly businessman allegedly bludgeoned his wife to death and threw their pet dog from the terrace of their six-storey residential apartment before jumping to his death. The incident took place near Gayathri Vihar on 8th main of Sadashivnagar on Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Atul Upadhyay (58) and wife Mamata (53). The couple, hailing from Mumbai, settled in the city 25 years ago. Atul was running a travel business in Ulsoor while Mamata was a homemaker.

According to a senior police officer, Rishabh, son of Atul’s brother, stayed with the couple, who didn’t have children of their own. On Tuesday, Rishabh, an LLB student, left for college around 9 am.

Later, the couple had an argument over some issue. In a fit of rage, Atul hit Mamata with dumbbells, killing her on the spot, police said.

Atul then took his dog to the terrace and flung it and jumped to his death. Both the dog and Atul died on the spot. The incident happened between 9 am and 9.30 am.

The police found a death note left by Atul stating that Mamata had advanced cancer, which had no treatment, and that there was no one to take care of them.

Rishabh told the police that the couple were upset about Mamata’s cancer.

They did not have any relatives except Rishabh in the city. Mamata’s sister, who is in the US, has been informed. The bodies have been kept at the MS Ramaiah Hospital. A postmortem will be conducted after the relatives arrive. The dog's body has been kept at a veterinary hospital.
