Bengaluru, Sept 11: The police have arrested a software engineer for allegedly raping his female colleague after threatening her at knifepoint at his residence in Doddanekkundi near HAL in Bengaluru.

The arrested has been identified as Praveen Bala (25), a native of Kerala. The victim, a 25-year-old woman from Gurugram had joined an IT major in Bengaluru in 2017 where Bala was also employed.

Later, they developed a friendship and began to live together. After quitting the firm, they joined another company when they shifted to Doddanekkundi. The duo decided to go their separate ways after differences cropped up between them six months ago.

According to police he contacted the woman over phone and said that a parcel in her name had reached his house. When she came, he allegedly raped her.

“She had shifted to a paying guest accommodation. But she and Bala remained friends as they worked in the same firm. Bala called the woman early on Friday morning, informing her about the parcel and requesting her to collect it. She rushed to his residence and discovered he had lied. She requested him to drop her back to her PG,” a police officer said quoting her statement.

Bala told her to spend some more time there and forcefully took her into his bedroom around 11.30am. He gagged her and told her he’d kill her if she screamed for help before raping her. The woman filed a complaint with HAL police on Sunday. The police arrested him on Monday.

“We subjected Bala and the woman to medical exam. We produced him before the court, which remanded him in judicial custody,” a cop said. HAL police have registered a case of rape and criminal intimidation under IPC sections 376 and 506.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
