After the death of five sisters, DC orders to fill abandoned quarries

Mangalore, Jul 21: Authorities in Dakshina Kannada have finally opened their eyes after five sisters met a watery grave in abandoned laterite stone quarries in two separate incidents within the district on Sunday.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim issued an order that all abandoned as well as live quarries should either be filled or fenced by lease-holders within five days.

Passing a magisterial order, Mr Ibrahim said that a violation would lead to suspension of quarry activities.

As per the order if the lease is on government land and the lease-holder fails to take up protective measures, the government will have to fill it at the cost of the lease-holder.

It could be recalled here that a similar order was issued sometime ago to close all the abandoned bore-wells in the district after a child fell into a bore well elsewhere in the state.

Heavy rains lashing the region had filled stone quarries located at Beluvai and Doomadachadavu to the brim. The kids who went to play there on Sunday without knowing the depth of the water, drowned.

On Sunday Suraksha (7) and Sukanya (4), daughters of Suresh and Seetha of Maladi in Belivai, drowned while playing near the stone quarry. Another three girls Vanisri (12), Meghasri (11) and Yakshitha (6), daughters of Vasu Shettigar and Seetha from Doomadachadavu also drowned.

Meanwhile Mangalore North MLA B A Mohiuddin Bava, said that around two weeks ago the state government asked all district administration to close down all expended quarries. He lamented that by the time a survey could be ordered, the tragedy took place.

He said that open and unfenced quarries pose a big threat during the monsoon.

Air India Express brings back Mangaluru–Muscat direct flights from March 2026

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
