Bengaluru, May 19: As predicted by many political pundits B S Yeddyurappa today delivered an emotional speech in the assembly and immediately resigned as chief minister without facing the floor test.
This time Yeddyurappa held the CM post for 30 hours. He tendered his resignation to Governor Vajubhai Vala before 4 p.m.
Despite the high drama for the last four days, with allegations of poaching and coercing reminding everyone of the infamous 'Operation Kamala' of 2007, the BJP fell short of at least six seats in the Assembly. The Supreme Court had directed the police to ensure the participation of all MLAs in the proceedings, the final nail in the coffin for the saffron party.
Yeddyurappa had resigned in a similar way after holding the chief minister's chair for seven days in 2007 after Kumaraswamy backed off from the alliance.
Interestingly, H D Deve Gowda became the prime minister after the first BJP government at the Centre led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee met a similar fate. Though the BJP became the single largest party after the 1996 polls, Vajpayee resigned after 13 days in office after failing to cobble up a majority.
