Bengaluru, Oct 17: The only accused in Goa-based perfumer Monika Ghurde's coldblooded murder case has finally confessed that he had raped her and spent many hours with her before smothering her.

21-year-old Rajkumar Singh also requested the Bengaluru police not to tell about his crime to his family in Punjab. "I am ready to face everything. But please ensure my family members do not get to know what I've committed. It'll create more problems for them," he said during his confession.

Rajkumar Singh allegedly raped and killed Ghurde at her flat in Sapana Raj Valley Apartment in Sangolda, Goa, in the early hours of October 6. He was angry because she had accused him of stealing an umbrella and that resulted in him losing his job. The fugitive was picked up from a hotel in Bengaluru.

Forcefully entered

He said: "It was around 6.35 pm (on October 5) that I went to her flat and knocked on the door as the bell was not functioning. She shouted "Kaun?" (who), and I said I was the company supervisor. If I'd said I was the security guard, she would not have opened the door. When she did, I showed her the knife and told her not to shout. She screamed out loud and I gag ged her mouth for nearly five minutes. She fell unconscious and I dragged her to the bathroom and then put her on the bed."

Singh said he asked her why she had complained against him, but she denied it. "I told her I've been thrown onto the streets. I lost my job, money and two bags too. All this happened on the day I was to get my salary; they did not pay me at all," Singh said.

Offered ATM cards

Ghurde tried to pacify him by offering him her ATM cards to withdraw money. But Singh said he didn't know how to withdraw cash. "I asked if there was enough balance (in her account). She taught me how to insert the card, select language and to withdraw cash." Singh wondered if he should step out while Ghurde sat with her hands tied.

"I was confused. If I let her go, she would complain. I kept thinking about it and a few hours passed. I had some eggs, had a shave, took a shower and wore her brother's clothes." During this time, he forced himself on her and took a video on the self on her and took a video on the mobile phone. "I thought I would threaten her that it will be made public if she complains to the police. I threatened to put it on YouTube."

The situation took a violent turn."I had told her I had come only for money and not to kill her. If I had to kill, I would have killed her five hours ago. I kept the knife aside and was trying to release her when she picked up the knife. I threw the knife and smothered her. I thought she had fainted. I tied her hands to the bed and walked out of the flat."

Ghurde had tried to change his mind. "She told me she would give me a job, keep me as security guard or personal driver and even her bodyguard. But I told her everyone who has been hit will say these things (referring to her assurances)," Singh told the cops. He claimed to have obtained a SIM card from a beggar by paying Rs 1,000 and wanted to check with the security staff at Ghurde's apartment about what had happened.

Every morning from the past week I read newspaper, I see this news. Look at the kind of journalism we have today! - Last week \ Police investigating if he actually raped her..\" This week -\" After tying to bed, I took bath. and raped her...\"
If you journalists editors have an iota of shame, stop glorifying such sex-crimes on your headlines! The nation has much bigger problems or success that can be reported on news."

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
