Another tiger invades Chikkamagaluru; captured tiger goes missing

Chikkamagaluru, Nov 21: Within a couple of days after a ferocious tiger which had been terrorizing people in Chikkamagaluru was captured by the Forest Department in Bababudangiri range, another tiger was sighted in a village in the district.

Residents of Kaimara in Chikkamagaluru taluk were a worried lot as many of them had sighted a tiger in a coffee plantation nearby. They have urged the Forest Department to catch the wild cat as they fear for their lives.

“We also received reports of a tiger moving around Krishnagiri estate and other places. Our staff have visited the places, and if found, we will drive it back into the forests, said M.S. Manik, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Chikkamagaluru division.

Hunt for elusive tiger

Meanwhile, a team of personnel from the forest and police departments, on Thursday morning, launched a hunt for the tiger, which was captured near Chikkamagaluru on Monday and was released into the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary here on Wednesday. However, their daylong search ended in disappointment as the big cat remained elusive.

Angry village residents had staged protests following the release of the animal, and prevented the officials from leaving the area on Wednesday. Only after they were assured that the tiger would be recaptured, were the officials allowed to go.

Forest officials involved in the search operations said that nearly 50 personnel from the Forest Department, about 40 from the police, four doctors and a wildlife expert searching for the tiger right through the day, but in vain.

The search operations continued on Friday. Prashant P.K., Assistant Conservator of Forests, said that the tiger was radio-collared and would be trapped soon.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

• Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

• STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

• Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
