Mangaluru, Dec 2: A tense atmosphere prevailed in Alekala village near Ullal after a group of youths led by activists of Social Democratic Party of India laid siege to the house of a Muslim leader protesting his silence over the arrest of “innocents” by Ullal police.
According to police the agitators also pelted stones at a police vehicle which rushed to the spot following a request by US Hamza, president of Juma Masjid and Sayyid Madani Dargah of Ullal.
The incident took place after Ullal police arrested two youths from Madoor on charge of indulging in violence during a protest in front of a hospital at Thokkottu on March 13 following the sexual abuse of a nursery student of Mangalore One School.
The protest was held after police allegedly tried to keep the three-and-half-year-old victim away from her parents in the hospital.
On Tuesday morning, a team of Ullal police led by Sub Inspector Bharati conducted search in few houses in Madoor locality and took at least four persons into custody and later arrested two among them.
Later, a group of people including family members of those who were arrested by the police and SDPI activists visited the house of Mr Hamza and requested him to exert pressure on the police to release the duo.
As Mr Hamza reportedly refused to intervene in the matter and said that cops will carry out their duty, the group staged a protest. A worried Hamza immediately informed Ullal police.
When the police reached the spot the group had already come out of the house. According to cops a few people in the ground pelted stones at the police vehicle before fleeing the spot. However, no damaged was inflicted.
Security was tightened in the area following this incident and protection was given to Mr Hamaza.
