Assembly polls: Saffron party desperately wants a victory in Kasaragod district

Kasaragod, May 1: The land of seven languages portrays a contrasting political landscape in the run-up to the elections to the State Assembly. Political pundits have put the district under close watch, for the poll outcome in three key constituencies here is crucial for the major players in Kerala politics.

While Manjeswaram witnesses a fierce fight among the Indian Union Muslim League, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Bharatiya Janata Party, Kasaragod could perhaps be the lone segment in the district where the IUML and BJP are locked in a straight fight. The scenario in the traditionally Left stronghold of Uduma has assumed new dimensions with the United Democratic Front fielding the firebrand Congress leader K. Sudhakaran in a bid to end the CPI(M)'s free run here since 1991.

Manjeswaram

In Manjeswaram, one of the few segments in the State where the BJP hopes to make its maiden entry into the Assembly, the three fronts have opted to field the same candidates who contested the 2011Assembly election.

Though a native of Kozhikode, K. Surendran, the BJP nominee, has been the runner-up in the segment during the last five elections.

Sitting IUML MLA P.B. Abdul Razak is hopeful of retaining the seat harping on the development projects he has initiated in the relatively backward area in the last five years.

The unconditional support offered to the Left Democratic Front by the influential Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Abubacker Musliyar and the possible anti-incumbency factor have given new hopes for CPI(M) nominee C.H. Kunhambu.

Uduma

Mr. Sudhakaran's entry has electrified the UDF camp at Uduma and the allies are found working overtime to ensure his victory. UDF campaign managers seem to believe that the front had to bite the dust in the past for want of a formidable candidate. The UDF had a majority of 835 votes in the segment in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The LDF's victory margin was 11,380 in the last Assembly elections. Sitting MLA K. Kunhiraman of the CPI(M) and BJP district president K. Sreekanth are his opponents.

Kasaragod

Sitting MLA N.A. Nellikkunnu of the IUML, who has been representing the Kasaragod segment eight times in a row, is facing a close contest from Hindu Aikyavedi State vice president and BJP nominee Kundar Raveesha Tantri. Being the chief priest of over 50 temples in the region, he commands respect from a wide spectrum of society. The presence of the Indian National League, Social Democratic Party of India, and People's Democratic Party in the fray and the unending delay in resolving the six-decade long drinking water crisis in the town and adjoining localities could mar the prospects of the IUML, which enjoys considerable grassroots support there. LDF-supported INL candidate A.A. Ameen is also in the fray.

LDF ahead in campaign

In the Left strongholds of Kanhangad and Thrikkarippur, CPI's E. Chandrasekharan, MLA, and CPI(M)'s M. Rajagopalan respectively have moved far ahead in the campaign, while the electioneering of Congress nominees Dhanya Suresh and K.P. Kunhikannan has just picked up momentum.

Putting the lingering endosulfan issue on the backburner, the fronts appear to highlight the stagnated or slow-paced developmental initiatives in the district as a major poll plank. When the UDF boasts of creating the new taluks of Manjeswaram and Vellarikkundu, initiating measure for the establishment of the government medical college at Badiadukka, and streamlining the road network, the LDF blames the ruling front for the tardy growth rate of the district. The BJP accuses the rival fronts for keeping the region under perpetual neglect despite governing the State successively for over six decades.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

Prajwal.jpg

Bengaluru: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Sunday said he would like to wait for the facts to come out of the investigation into an alleged sex scandal involving his nephew and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, but asserted that there is no question of forgiving anyone who has committed a crime as per law.

The former chief minister said he has nothing to do with Prajwal Revanna reportedly leaving the country, and it is the responsibility of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to get him back if required.

The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda's elder son H D Revanna, who is an MLA and former minister.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days.

Prajwal Revanna is the BJP-JD(S) alliance's candidate from Hassan, which went to polls on Friday.

Kumaraswamy said, "I have noticed that the chief minister has ordered an SIT probe. Whether it is me or Deve Gowda (his father), we have always conducted ourselves respectfully towards women and have responded positively when anyone came with any sufferings. We have tried to address them."

Speaking to reporters here, he said, "The Hassan related issue that started during elections, let the facts come out through a probe. Whoever it is, who has committed the mistake as per the law of the land...there is no question of forgiving anyone who has committed the mistake. So let the facts come out from the probe, after that I will react."

To a question on Prajwal Revanna going to a foreign country, Kumaraswamy said, "It is not related to me. SIT probe has been ordered, officials have been put to work. If he has gone to a foreign country, getting him back is their responsibility. What should I say, if I'm asked. They (SIT) will get him, don't worry."

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision to constitute a SIT to probe the alleged sex scandal involving the MP.

Meanwhile, the police have information that Prajwal has left the country, according to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s office.

"Prajwal Revanna’s explicit video clips are being circulated in Hassan and it appears prime facie that women were sexually assaulted,' the statement said, adding that the government decided to form an SIT based on a petition by the chief of the Karnataka State Commission for Women.

The Commission's chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary on Thursday wrote to Siddaramaiah and state police chief Alok Mohan, seeking a probe into the videos that are in circulation in Hassan.

Prajwal has through his election agent lodged a complaint with the authorities that the videos are "doctored" and being circulated to tarnish his image ahead of elections.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is being pushed towards a “slow death” inside Tihar jail by denying him insulin and consultations with his doctor.

Kejriwal, who has Type-2 diabetes, has been asking for insulin and a video conferencing with his family doctor but his requests are being denied by the jail administration, party spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said in a press conference.

"I want to say with full responsibility that a conspiracy is underway for the slow death of Kejriwal," Bharadwaj claimed citing blood sugar readings of the Chief Minister in jail.

He also slammed the Tihar administration, BJP, Centre and Delhi LG for allegedly denying insulin to Kejriwal and said the Delhi Chief Minister had been suffering from diabetes for the last 20-22 years.

On Friday, the chief minister council Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said Kejriwal has not been administered insulin to control his sugar levels since his arrest, terming it “shocking” and “alarming”.

The ED had on Thursday claimed before the court that Kejriwal was eating food high in sugar like mangoes and sweets every day, despite having Type-2 diabetes, to create grounds for medical bail.

Kejriwal, however, refuted the ED’s claims by asserting before a court that the food he consumed was in conformity with the diet chart prepared by his doctor.

“Out of 48 meals sent from home, only three times mangoes were there…,” Singhvi told the court.

Bharadwaj said Kejriwal was allowed by the court to use a machine in the jail to monitor his daily blood sugar levels.

"Overall, it was a conspiracy to finish Kejriwal so his multiple organ damage and when he comes out of jail after 2-4 months he goes for treatment of kidney, heart and other organs," said Bharadwaj, who holds the portfolio of health in Delhi government.
