Bengaluru, Aug 23: The ashes of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee were immersed in Cauvery river by Karnataka BJP leaders on Thursday.

The urn containing the ashes was taken in a procession from the party headquarters in the city to the temple town of Srirangapatna, about 130 km from here, and immersed in the Cauvery at Paschima Vahini, BJP said.

The "asthi visarjan" (immersion of ashes) was attended by state BJP president and former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, Union minister Ananth Kumar, former deputy chief minister R Ashoka and MP Shobha Karandlaje among others.

Earlier, the urn containing the ashes of the BJP stalwart, who passed away on August 16, was brought to city from Delhi on Wednesday by Yeddyurappa and other party leaders.

The BJP has also planned to conduct 'asthi visarjan' event at seven places across the state on August 25.

This is in line with party's decision to take out the 'Asthi Kalash Yatra' in all states, so that all people could offer their tributes to the 93-year old popular leader, who died after a prolonged illness.

On August 26, a condolence meeting will be held here, the party said.
