Mangaluru, Mar 10: Police have arrested a person on Monday in connection with the stone-pelting incident that occurred at St Joseph Vaz prayer centre at Panir near Deralakatte on the outskirts of the city last month, damaging the glass enclosure of the cubicle housing statues of Mother Mary and Infant Jesus.

The police have arrested Ananda (30), son of Lingappa, resident of Ukkuda in Kinya village in Mangaluru taluk in connection with the stone-pelting.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner S Murugan said that based on credible information and after sustained questioning of the locals, Ananda, previously employed with the same church, was taken into police custody.
Following inquiry, he confessed that he had pelted the stone at the glass cubicle more out of grudge against the church due to insufficient salary. On the night of February 24, after getting drunk in the graveyard next to the prayer centre, he threw the stone at the glass cubicle in a fit of anger, he informed, adding that the crime had gained a lot of media attention and created undue sensation among the public due to its alleged communal nature.
He also informed that the accused Ananda was arrested on Monday and sent to judicial custody on Tuesday. It is said that Ananda had left his job at the prayer centre approximately two weeks before he pelted the stone at the glass cubicle. He has been booked under sections 427 and 295 of the Indian Penal Code.
Mr Murugan also said that the accused Ananda was accompanied by another person who was not part of the crime. The accompanying person will be produced as a witness in the case. On prima facie, it was a non-provocative incident of stone-pelting and non-communal in nature. However, the stray incident became an opportunity for certain elements to attempt wrecking the communal harmony of the region, he observed.
He said that the investigation of the case was taken up by Mangaluru South ACP. Under his directive, a special team was constituted led by Ullal police inspector Savithru Tej with the team comprising of PSI Bharathi, PSI Rajendra, Mohan, Kamalaksha, Lingaraju, Prashanth, Ravichandra to crack the case, he said.
Such random crimes are extremely difficult to solved and apprehend the accused. However, the accused had been arrested with efforts put in by the police department in solving the crime, said the police commissioner.
DCP (Law & Order) Santhosh Babu and DCP (Crime & Traffic) Vishnuvardhan were present on the occasion.
