Attack on Muslim youth: Mangaluru cops arrest 14th accused

Mangaluru, Sep 2: In connection with the brutal Hindutva assault on a Muslim youth in the city occurred more than a week ago, the police have arrested another accused.

The arrested has been identified as Padmanabha (38), a resident of Bajpe on the outskirts of the city.

With this, 14 persons have been arrested in relation to the case. The police had arrested 13 accused on August 25. The arrested was sent to Ballari jail on Tuesday, according to the police.

28-year-old Shakir, who was working as a manager at a supermarket in the city, was assaulted on August 24. He was reportedly in a car with the Hindu girl, who is also an employee of the supermarket.

A group of youths enquired about the personal details of the duo, and later dragged Shakir out, stripped him to his undergarments, tied him to an electric pole and beat him up in full public view.

The 13 accused arrested a day after the attack are: Santhosh Poojary (23) of Padu Kudeera in Karkala taluk, Abhiram (23) of Babugudde, Kiran (29) of Hunasemakki, Praveen Shetty of Eligoli in Karkala, Bhujanga Shetty (46) of Siddakatte, Chandrakanth Rao (42) of Bejai, Ghanashyam Acharya (24) of Attavar Jain compound, Dhanush (20), Muthuraj (21), Kishan (20) of Babugudde, Naveen (42) of Melinamogaru, Vivek (38) of Babugudde and Kirankumar (25) of Attavar.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
