Attack on youth sparks communal tension in Ullal again

Ullal, Jun 22: A tense situation prevailed in the region after two youth were seriously assaulted by a gang of five miscreants while they were waiting at a bus stand at Ullal junction on Saturday. The situation remained tense for sometime as the news of the assault spread among the locals.

The victims are Mohammed Shah Rukh (28), son of Shamsuddeen and Haider (29), son of Mohammed. Both the youth are residents of Kotepura.

It is said that Shah Rukh and Haider were waiting for a bus at the bus stop when a gang of five men arrived in a drunken stupor began to assault the two youth without any reason or provocation. The duo was gravely injured in the assault.

As the news of the assault spread, clashes erupted between members of two groups and a tense situation prevailed. The victims were admitted to a private hospital in Thokkottu.

The victims have named Sharan, Srujan, Harish and Deekshith among others as the assaulters, in the complaint lodged by them at Ullal police station.

A person named Srujan, who is a resident of Mogaveerpatna, has been reportedly taken into custody by the police in connection to the assault.

Minister visits hospital

Shah Rukh was employed at a fish oil mill near Ullal Paris hotel in Kotepura. It is said that health minister U T Khader, who is also the local MLA, visited the victims at the hospital and urged the police commissioner to take strict action against the assaulters.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
