Bhatkal, Jan 12: Majlis-Islah-O-Tanzeem, a powerful organization in Bhatkal, which had given bandh call in the town on Monday, has put off the agitation following the intervention by the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police of Uttara Kannada district.

President of the association Mohammed Muzammil Kazia conveyed this to presspersons after Deputy Commissioner Ujwal Kumar Ghosh and Superintendent of Police R. Dileep held a meeting with him. The officials reportedly told the Tanzeem leaders that their agitation may affect the law and order and peace in the district.

Mr. Kazia said that as the matter had been brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister and they had assured of impartial investigation into the issue, they had decided to put off the agitation. However, he clarified that in case injustice was meted out to them, an agitation would be inevitable.

The association's basic objection was to the version of the City Crime Branch police of Bengaluru who have arrested four youths from Bhatkal, that explosives were recovered from a locked house near Abubkar Masjid at Tengingundi Road in Bhatkal. The association had termed the police raid as suspicious and an attempt to defame Bhatkal terming it as'terrorists' hideout'.
