Mangalore, Jul 9: With social activists and doctors expressing displeasure over the poor rate of reporting and tackling malaria cases in the city, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim directed Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation and District Health Officer to chalk out an action plan to ensure that all hospitals and clinics in MCC and district limits report on the positive cases of malaria within 15 days.
He was speaking at a meeting on malaria control' with district health officials and MCC malaria control committee here on Tuesday.
According to statistics, Mangalore city had recorded 886 cases of malaria in June, while Dakshina Kannada district has recorded 998 cases of malaria in the same month. Nine patients suffering from malaria have died in the entire district so far in 2014.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr Srinivas Kakkilaya said that with the spread of the disease beyond city limits, there was an urgent need to contain malaria and destroy sources of malaria breeding centres in major public areas.
A few staff at the Mangalore International Airport have been infected with malaria and they should be treated. Fogging should be done in and around the airport premises. The authorities should convene a meeting of all the builders in the city limits and direct them to use rapid diagnostic kits to test malaria among labourers on the spot. The builders should be directed to destroy the source of malaria breeding at construction sites, he said, adding that there was a need to create awareness among the people on the need to destroy mosquito breeding centres at their sources.
Zilla Panchayat CEO Tulasi Maddineni said that a software would be developed to monitor the malaria cases reported in the district. As per the plan, when a patient is tested positive for malaria in a particular hospital or clinic, a message will be sent to the authorities with the details of the patient, following which the volunteers will visit the patient and destroy the source of mosquito breeding.
She informed that the software was likely to be ready by the month end.
