Bandh claims a life in Mangaluru: Youth drowns in pond, four rescued

Mangaluru, Sep 2: A youth drowned while his four friends were rescued by locals after they had gone for a swim at a pond in Someshwar in Mangaluru taluk on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Naveen (32), son of Jossie D’Souza, a resident of Chembugudde near Thokottu. He was youngest among five children of his parents. He was supposed to get married in December this year.

Four others, identified as, Nithin, Sunil, Mujahid and Rajesh, were rescued.

It is learnt that Naveen and a group of youths from Thokkottu, who were off-duty on account of Bharat Bandh called by trade unions, decided to enjoy the day.

They played volleyball together afternoon and then visited Someshwar beach. After playing in the sea water for some time, they went to a pond located near Someshwar temple to take bath.

All of a sudden Naveen drowned in the water. His friend Mujahid and three others, who made a futile attempt to rescue him, were also washed away. However, they were pulled out by others.

Naveen was also pulled out of the water and was rushed to a private hospital. However, doctors pronounced him brought dead. A case has been registered at Ullal Police Station.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: The Mangaluru City Police have issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of the inaugural ceremony of Karavali Utsava, which will be held at the Karavali Utsava Ground on Saturday.

The festival will be inaugurated at 6:00 pm by Dakshina Kannada District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Cultural and public programmes will be held at the venue every evening and will continue until January 2.

According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, parking of vehicles is strictly prohibited on both sides of the road from Lalbagh to Karavali Utsava Ground. Visitors are requested to park their vehicles only at designated parking areas.

To help the public, traffic signboards and parking guidance flex boards have been installed along the routes leading to the venue. The police have urged commuters and visitors to follow these instructions to ensure smooth traffic movement.

The police have appealed to the public to cooperate by following traffic rules and parking guidelines to avoid inconvenience during the festival.
