Bangalore, Oct 17: Formalities for release of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, who has been granted bail by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case, from the prison here would be completed by Friday evening, a top jail official said.

As the former Tamil Nadu chief minister secured relief from the apex court, DIG prisons PM Jaisimha told PTI, "The formalities for the release of Jayalalithaa from the Parapanna Agrahara Prison will be completed by evening."

He said the process for release has been set in motion amidst tight security in and around the prison premises.

As the news of the apex court granting relief to Jayalalithaa broke, groups of Jayalalithaa's supporters erupted in celebrations and danced in joy hailing their leader.

Police, who have tightened security in and around the jail complex ever since Jayalalithaa was lodged in the prison here on September 27 when she was convicted by the special court, have put in place additional security arrangements.

The entry point on the road leading to the jail is blocked at least a km away from it.

Earlier, the Supreme Court granted bail to Jayalalithaa after a bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu stayed the sentence and warned Jayalalithaa against causing any delay by seeking adjournment in her appeal in Karnataka high court.

Police increased security in and around Hosur road on Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, about 20 km from the prison complex, to prevent any untoward incident as many AIADMK supporters have been camping in the area in various lodges and resorts, anticipating their leader's release.

Prohibitory orders are in force in and around the prison complex with over 1,000 policemen on duty, apart from senior officials, including five DCPs. City Armed Reserve force is also deployed, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar told reporters near the prison.

Asked when the release of Jayalalithaa would come, he said he was not aware of it but the police were prepared for it in terms of security arrangements.

He also said he was not aware if Tamil Nadu chief minister Panneerselvam would be arriving in Bangalore.

The Supreme Court also granted bail to Jayalalithaa's aide Sasikala and her relatives VN Sudhakaran, disowned foster-son of the former chief minister, and Ilavarasi, who are also lodged in the same prison.

The special court had sent Jayalalithaa and three others to four years in jail in the 18-year-old Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case.

The Karnataka high court had on October 7 rejected the bail pleas of Jayalalithaa and the three others.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.
