Bantwal: 4 held for political brawl; 2 held for giving it communal tinge on social media

Bantwal, Nov 22: Police have arrested four persons in connection with the clash between BJP and Congress workers at Kelinja in Vitla of Bantwal taluk last Saturday after B S Yeddyurappa stepped down as chief minister. All four arrested are said to be supporters of Congress.

However, the police have also arrested two more persons for giving communal tinge to the clash between political enthusiasts and spreading false news on social media apparently to disrupt peace.

The local police arrested Mohammed Tamim (28), Abdul Rahiman (35), Mohammed Zakaria (25) and Sulaiman Vakaitturu (38) on charge of violation of prohibitory orders and rioting. Later, Nitin (29) of Kerale village in Bantwal and Dinesh alias Dayananda (31) of Pambettadi Village in Sullia were arrested on charge of spreading false rumours.

According to police, the Congress supporters came in a few motorbikes and held celebration in the village after Yeddyurappa tendered his resignation to the post of CM on Saturday.

Congress workers started shouting slogans like “BJP murdabad,” and BJP workers who were present in the vicinity, responded by chanting, “Congress murdabad”. Soon after this, there were heated arguments which led to a brawl. The workers attacked each other with soda bottles and sticks. As many as four persons had suffered minor injuries in the clash.

The message of clash was posted on WhatsApp that led to another clash between the supporters of the two parties in Vijayadka in Bantwal a few hours later.

Dakshina Kannada SP Ravikantegowda said that though it was small incident, some of the miscreants have given it a communal colour, and sent pictures as well as inflammatory texts on social media. “This time we are coming down hard on these mischief mongers, and have booked cases against them,” he said.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
