Bantwal, Jun 20: Amidst incessant rains a strong wind uprooted a giant peepal tree near Melkar in Bantwal taluk on Wednesday killing a north Indian man and injuring another.
The tree fell on a labourer tent in front of an ice cream parlour on the National Highway at around 3:30 p.m. There were two labourers in the tent when the tragedy took place.
Ramasevak (36) a native of Uttar Pradesh was almost crushed under the tree. He breathed his last soon after being taken to a private hospital. Another labourer, Dileep, who sustained injuries is recovering at a hospital.
The labourers have been making cement vase and selling them in the area. They were living in the tent for past few weeks. It is learnt that Ramsevak was on makeshift toilet adjacent to the tent when the tragedy took place.
Police and fire fighters rushed to the spot. The tree is being removed. A case has been registered at Bantwal town police station.
