The plan came to light after police arrested seven persons in connection with a theft of black pepper stock worth Rs 8.5 lakh from a godown in Handelu near Moodbidri earlier. The police also recovered stolen black pepper and seized two vehicles after arresting the seven persons.

The black pepper stored in 21 gunny bags at the godown belonging to K M B Enterprises were stolen on July 21. The owner of the godown had expressed suspicion about one of the labourers identified as Harish.

Acting on a tip off, the police on Wednesday waylaid a Mahindra Scorpio which was transporting black papers near Mahaveer Collge. Three persons on board the vehicle identified as Naveen (30) from Valpady, Harish Poojary (32) from Kallamundkur and Sukesh Shetty (23) from Kairgundi here, confessed to their crime during questioning.

They also revealed that Yogi alias Yogiraj (23) from Nellikar, Yogeesh Salian (26), Mahesh (20) from Kotebagilu, and Pratap Rai (23) had helped them in stealing black pepper bags.

The police then recovered 16 more gunny bags full of black pepper from a deserted house in Hudco Colony here and arrested those four.

Meanwhile, two more persons involved in the plot to burgle the house of Radhika, the second wife of JD(S) leader Kumaraswamy, were arrested in Mangalore by a team led by deputy superintendent of police, Venkatesh Prasanna, on Tuesday. They are Ravi from Bajagoli, and Manjula from Mangalore.

It is learnt that the accused were planning to get the help of professional robbers for a major robbery in the house where Ms Radhika is currently residing with her family members.

Hoping to loot valuables worth Rs 20 crore from Radhika 's house, they were also trying to collect more arms and lethal weapons, it is learnt.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
