Bantwal: Priest booked for assault on Class 3 student in Church

Mangaluru, Apr 21: Police have registered a case against a Christian priest for beating up a Class 3 student at a church in Peruvai in Bantwal taluk.

Sources said that Fr Andrew D'C0sta, the priest of Our Lady of Fatima Church remained untraced after a complaint was lodged against him with the jurisdictional police station.

Even though the incident took place on April 12, it came to light a couple of days later when a local resident informed about the brutal punishment to a Childline personnel over phone.

On April 15, a team from Childline led by Renni D'Souza visited the Church and met the victim. They found wounds on the back, hands and legs of the child.

The injured child revealed that he was scolded and hit with a stick by the priest after he failed to repeat the hymns.

Though the parents were angry with the conduct of the priest, they did not immediately file any compliant following pressure from the community members, it is learnt.

Meanwhile, a report about the incident was placed before the District Child Protection Unit by the Childline team.

The office bearers of the United Christian Association also have condemned the act of the priest.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.
