Bantwal: Tension grips Maripalla after man brutally attacked by gang of 11

Bantwal, Dec 9: A tense atmosphere prevailed in the sensitive town of Maripalla in Bantwal taluk after a group of miscreants attempted to murder a 38-year-old by brutally stabbing him in the broad daylight.

A critically injured Haneef alias Mada Haneef, has been admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru. His condition is said to be extremely critical.

The attack took place when Haneef was standing in front of a shop at Maripalla junction soon after his brother Hakeem dropped him there.
As many as 11 persons who came in an Alto car and motorbikes stabbed and attacked with lethal weapons repeatedly before fleeing the scene.

Haneef collapsed in a pool of blood. However, when local people rushed to the spot, he was still alive. He was then taken to a hospital.

It is learnt that Haneef was one of the accused in the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Rifai and a few other cases.

Following the incident dozens of people gathered in the spot. Police had to resort to mild baton charge to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

ASP Vincent Shantakumar, Banwal circle inspector Beliappa and other police personnel visited the spot. Police have ruled out the communal angle in this attack. A case has been registered at Bantwal rural police station.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
