Bantwal, Jul 13: A man ended his life after fatally assaulting his wife and mother  at Mani in Kodaje-Panthadka of Bantwal taluk on Friday night. The two women have been rushed to a private hospital in Mangalore in a rather critical state and are still battling for life.

The deceased is Abdul Hameed, while the two fatally attacked by him are his mother Mariamma (55) and his wife Asma (28).

Hameed was working in a super market in Mangalore. He was also working in a mosque in the past. He quit job in the mosque while joining a new job.

Just a week after this, on Thursday, on returning home from work he picked a fight with Asma over trivial matter. His two older brothers Abdul Khader and Abdul Razak had been to a nearby mosque to offer special Ramzan prayers.

Raged over the same fight, he slit his wife using a sickle. When his mother rushed to rescue the daughter-in-law, even she ended receiving the sling from the same sickle. When both the women fell on ground in unconscious state, Hameed resorted to suicide by hanging himself in a room in the house.

A neighbor rushed to the Masjid and informed about the same to the two brother, who rushed back home only to see the brother dead and mother and sister-in-law lay in pool of blood.

Troubled mind

Hameed married a lady from Mallur and has two children-Saleem (1) and Ashika (5). While Hameed worked as a 'Moilar' in mosque, it is said that he had been good to his family. But, within no time, he developed psychiatric problem, following which he started behaving indifferently. With this his wife had abandoned him and started living with her parents. After community leaders intervened and sorted the matter, Asma came back to live with Hameed. However, within no time Hameed started fighting with her again and on Thursday it crossed all limits with Hameed wanting to make her to death.

Vittal police visited the spot and seized the sickle from the house.

The police suspects that Hameed had planned to kill his wife but everything went awry. However, the family and acquaintances believe that Hammed was upset and after having assaulted wife and mother he must have repented and ended his life.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
