Sentenced
Mangalore, Jul 18: A youth from Bantwal who had been accused of kidnapping and raping a minor girl was convicted and sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on Thursday, while another accused facing charges of abetment was acquitted.

Ramesh (21) from Kanyana in Bantwal, was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by the District Principal Sessions and Special Court.

This court sentence is the first case that was tried under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 in Dakshina Kannada.

Ramesh was a distant relative of the girl and in September last year, he took her from Uppinangady to Dharmasthala on pretext of marrying her and convinced her they were married with a fake gold mangalsutra.

The same day, he took her to a house in Konaje Pattori and raped her. He then took her to a house located in Bangalore and raped her for the second time.

Soon after the incidents, the girl realised that she had been duped by Ramesh and lodged a complaint at Kadaba police station.

The second accused Babu Koraga (60), who faced charges of abetment in the kidnapping and rapes, was acquitted by the court.
