Kasaragod, Jan 28: The day-long hartal called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeking the resignation of Finance Minister K.M. Mani in connection with the bar bribery scandal was total in the district.

Shops, business houses, and banks did not function. Public transport vehicles did not ply. Train passengers were stranded in railway stations for hours. While private vehicles were seen on roads in parts of the district, the hartal supporters waylaid vehicles, including two-wheelers, in and around Mavungal, near Kanhangad, regarded as a BJP stronghold.

The BJP activists waylaid the car of a senior journalist at Mavungal and tore away the ‘Press’ sticker on the vehicle, forcing him to turn back.

The party workers also waylaid a number of inter-State trucks at Mavungal, disrupting vehicular movement along the National Highway. The hartal supporters blocked a police vehicle as it passed close to the BJP office at Karanthakkad here.

The protesters forced a few shops in the town and parts of the district to down shutters in the morning. The BJP activists took out protest marches at major centres in the district later in the day. No major untoward incidents were reported thanks to heavy security.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
