Bengaluru, Dec 6: V Elumalai, the BBMP councilor from Sagayapuram ward passed away in the wee hours of Thursday. The 40-year-old councillor was admitted to a private hospital here around 20 days ago and was reportedly on ventilator support for as many days.
Medical sources said that he passed away due to multi-organ failure. He is survived by his wife and three children.
The councillor, who was the chairperson for the Standing Committee for Social Justice, was admitted to Santhosh Hospital in Frazer Town during mid-November, to get a small abscess removed from his nose. However, after undergoing the medical treatment in this private hospital, he slipped into coma, claimed his family members.
Later, he was admitted to Vikram Hospital for better treatment. But, he continued in coma for more than two weeks.
The issue of medical negligence by private hospitals was raised in the BBMP monthly council meeting in November by many corporators. They said that private hospitals were becoming 'death centres' instead of places of healing.
The corporators had also urged Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun to seek the official medical report from the hospital and investigate into the issue.
In order to pay tribute to the corporator, the BBMP has declared a holiday to all BBMP offices in the city. Except for emergency services such as health centers and market, all other services will not be operational. Sources said the funeral would be held at K.G.Halli on Thursday.
Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun said that the BBMP will seek the help of Karnataka Medical Council to look into the medical negligence issue. "With the help of KMC, we can get thorough details of what happened with the corporator and whether action canbe initiated against the doctors due to their negligence. The chief health officer of BBMP, with the consent of the BBMP Commissioner will approach the KMC immediately," she said.
