Beedi workers take to streets demanding payment of pending DA

Mangalore, Jul 4: Members of K Beedi Workers' Federation, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), staged a protest in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner at here on Friday, demanding immediate payment of higher dearness allowance to beedi workers which is being delayed by owners of beedi companies.

Several beedi workers participated in the demonstration demanded their dearness allowance from the month of April. They alleged that the payment of higher dearness allowance is being delayed by owners of the beedi companies. They also demanded immediate implementation of the decisions taken at a tripartite meeting of beedi company owners, union leaders and labour department officials.

Addressing the protestors, V Seetaram Berinja, General Secretary of the federation said that according to a directive issued by the Labour Bureau, the consumer price index for industrial workers has gone up by 705 for the current financial year 2014-15 and beedi workers should get 3 paise for every point or Rs 21.15 from April 1. But the payment has been delayed for beedi workers, he said.

Activists Sulochana, Shivappa Kotian, Saraswati and several others participated in the demonstration.

Prior to the demonstration, the group of beedi workers assembled at Ballal Bagh in the city and marched towards the office of Deputy Commissioner near State Bank.

Following the demonstration, the beedi workers submitted a memorandum to the DC stating their demands.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
