Belagavi: Jun 6: Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti-backed Independent MLA, Sambhaji Patil from Belagavi South constituency, infamous for his anti-Kannada stand, is back in the news again for all the wrong reasons.

SAMBAJI PATIL
Patil, his wife Ujwala S Patil, and their son Sagar are facing a charge of dowry harassment with latter's wife lodging a complaint with the Women Police Station here on Saturday. The complaint came to light on Sunday.

Mr. Sagar's wife, Sheetal (34), has lodged the complaint against her husband, her father-in-law, her mother-in-law, besides seven others, including her sister-in-law and her husband.

Mr. Sambhaji, a four-time Mayor of Belagavi, is accused number two and his wife is third among the 10 accused persons.

Mr. Sagar has been also booked for having a second wife during the lifetime of his first spouse and without obtaining a divorce from Ms. Sheetal.

Women Police Station officials said that cases have been registered under Sections 498, 504, 494/149 of Indian Penal Code and Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, based on the complaint.

The police said that Ms. Sheetal, a native of Pandharpur, married Mr. Sagar on May 30, 2011 but had had no children from him.

Rs. 50-lakh demand

She has alleged that Mr. Sagar and her parents, brother and sister in-laws had subjected her to physical and psychological torture by demanding Rs. 50 lakh for long. As she could not meet their demands, she was sent to her maternal home on April 19 this year.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sagar took a second wife in marriage, Ms. Sheetal alleged and said that she was also threatened of dire consequences if she opened her mouth or approached the police or court in this connection. Left with no option, Ms. Sheetal lodged the complaint for justice and action against the accused persons, she said.

Mr. Sambhaji Patil, however, said that he was not aware of the details of the complaint. Pressed for a response, he said: “Let us see what happens in court.”

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
