Mangaluru, Nov 23: On a scorching Sunday of screeching tyres, dust streaks and revving bikes, new faces held the aces in MRF Mogrip FMSCI National Supercross Championship 2014 at Kulur on the outskirts of the city.
Minister for Youth Services and Sports K Abhayachandra Jain inaugurated the event. Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T Khader showcased seized attention by riding a bike.
Unfortunately, defending champion and local lad — K P Aravind of Team TVS Racing could not take part in the event being held in Mangaluru after 12 years thanks to a broken thumb.
Arvind from neighbouring Udupi had a slender four point lead over team mate Harith Noah going in to the Mangaluru round with the final round scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on November 30.
Organised by Godspeed, Pune under the aegis of The Federation of Motor Sports Club of India, the event saw competitions in eight different categories including the newly introduced Junior SX class (open to group A/B/C/D up to 260cc) and for those below 15-years. There is also the SX 2, Indian expert class group B and C races, private expert class - group C and novice class - group C - for two/four stroke vehicles up to 260cc.
A highlight of the event was the track designed by Brad Ripple, an ace supercross driver from the USA. This 900 metre track has three table tops, unlike the normal two used in the Nashik, Pune, Chennai and Coimbatore legs, says Shyam Kothari, president of Godspeed. Another unique feature of the event was the three-day international supercross and motocross training that Brad imparted to the participants at the track since Thursday.
The race featured edge of the seat racing in a track that has 25 jumps, a step-up jump, whoops and berms. The penultimate round saw around 120 riders from various parts of the country showcase their motocross skills.
