Mangalore, Jun 21: The Backward Classes Morcha of Dakshina Kannada unit of BJP staged a demonstration in front of the deputy commissioner 's office here on Saturday, against the state government 's failure to provide housing scheme facilities to beneficiaries in backward taluks in the state.
Under the leadership of former minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, party workers protested against the state government 's failure to construct houses for the poor under the Basava Vasathi Yojane (Rural Housing Scheme).
Lashing out at the state government, BJP district vice president Umanath Kotian said that the state government was neglecting the needs of the people from the backward classes. Although the chief minister had made promises to construct 20 houses in each gram panchayat under the housing scheme, the beneficiaries in the state have not yet received housing facilities. A total of 20,000 houses were to be constructed in Karnataka under the housing scheme in 2013-14. However, the state government has failed to complete the target, he said.
Criticising the government for rejecting the proposal to legalise the illegal houses built by the poor, he said that there were dozens of poor people from backward classes in the state who were homeless, while others who live in homes built illegally on government land. Instead of building homes for the underprivileged, the government wants to throw out the poor from homes built on illegally acquired land, he said, demanding that the government should immediately provide homes to the underprivileged.
A total of 4,060 houses had been sanctioned for Dakshina Kannada by the government under the scheme in 2013-14.
MLC K Monappa Bhandary, BJP district president Pratap Simha Nayak, Kishore Rai and several others participated in the demonstration.
A memorandum was handed over to the deputy commissioner in this regard.
