Mangaluru/Udup, Nov 25: Dozens of Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha activists on Tuesday courted arrest in the twin districts while staging black-flag demonstrations during the visit of the Home Minister K J George.

According to local leaders of Yuva Morcha the intention behind their black-flag demonstration was to protest the failure of the home minister to check the increasing incidences of sexual assaults and atrocities on women in the State.

This step was in line with the BJP Yuva Morcha's State unit's decision to protest and demonstrate black flags to three other Ministers in the State – Dinesh Gundu Rao, Qamarul Islam and H. Anjaneya – whom the party accuse of being corrupt.

However, Mr George's all scheduled programmes in Dakshina Kananda and Udupi were undisrupted on Tuesday thanks to the timely action by police.

At Malpe in Udupi protesters with black flags took to the streets even before the home minister could arrive. The agitators, who gathered near the gate of Malpe port, shouted slogans against the minister showing black flags.

Police rushed to the spot and detained nearly three dozens of protesters and seized black flags. Mr. George inaugurated the new administrative building of Coastal Security Police in Malpe amidst protests.

The black-flag protest erupted in Mangaluru city too when Mr George was on his way to City Police Commissionerate to address the press in the evening. Earlier in the morning Mr George visited district Congress office and inaugurated police community hall located behind the office of Superintendent of Police in Mangaluru.

However, the Yuva Morcha activists resorted to protest near the Commissionerate when the Home Minister returned from Bantwal visit.

The police picked up another three dozens of demonstrators and brought the situation under control. All the detained agitators were later released.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
