Mangaluru, Dec 12: Saffron fringe groups in coastal Karnataka have warned the Dakshina Kannada district administration against granting permission to Dr Zakir Naik, an authority on comparative religion, who is scheduled to address an inter-faith conference in Mangaluru on January 3, 2016.

In a joint press meet leaders of Vishwa Hindu Parishat, Bajrang Dal, Hindu Jagarana Vedike and ABVP threatened to stage a massive protest if the authorities gave permission to Dr Naik’s event in the coastal city.

Claiming that the founder of Islamic Research Foundation speaks ill of Hindu religion and its gods, MB Puranik, regional working president of VHP, said that the former’s speeches creates disharmony in the society.

Mr Puranik went on to claim that Dr Naik’s proposed Mangaluru visit is part of a conspiracy of Congress government of Karnataka, which according to him intends to disrupt communal harmony in Dakshina Kannada.

“If the permission was given to Dr Naik’s programme then district administration and the state government will face the consequences,” he warned.

Togadia programme

Mr Puranik said that Vishva Hindu Parishad international working president Praveen Togadia will be visiting Sringeri on January 6. On the same day it has been decided to hold public meetings of Mr Togadia in Dakshina Kannada districts, he said.

Mr Puranik said that Togadia raises his voice against terrorism but he never provokes people. District administration should not deny permission to Mr Togadia’s public events in this part, he added.

Memorandum

Prior to addressing the press meet, they submitted a memorandum to S Murugan, Commissioner of Mangaluru City Police, raising objection to Dr Naik’s programme.

Satyajith Surathkal, state co convener of Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Sharan Pumpwell, Bajrang Dal convener and SN Tejaswi, ABVP divisional organising secretary were also present.
